breast abscess

by jvs123, Nov 29, 2002 12:00AM
I underwent a surgery for breast abscess on my left breast  on Nov 1st 2002.My investigations say:

Surgery done under GA,Left breast painted and draped .Incision made on the submit of the swelling which was just below the nipple.Thick pus let out.30ml of thick pus present.Pus sent for culture and found OK.Loculations broken down.Wash given usingH2o2,

betadine and saline.Roller guaze used and wound packed.

I have been going for dressing for the past 1 month.

My mammogram &  ultrasound taken on 1st oct 2002 showed post traumatic/inflammatory tissue thickening in lower inner quadrant(L)breast. Then I underwent ultrasound(Lt) breast on 26th Occt 2002.It showed Haematoma?Breat abscess(Lt) side.

The surgery as said above was done on Nov 1st 2002.

It was a deep abscess.

I have been told that the wound is healing well. But there has been some discharge. Now after surgery the nipple looks a little retracted. The tissue thickening is still there .This has reduced  very little after surgery.

How long will it take for this thickening to soften?

My doctor says until the wound completely heals.

But a second opinion given was any abcess when drained should soften within a month.

Please let me know if I have to go in for a biopsy?

Should I go for a biopsy?

Dear jvs123,  The timing of healing varies among individuals.  It may take longer for you especially if this was a deep abscess.  There may always be somewhat of a change for you.  If the thickening is worsening rather than getting better then let your doctor know.
