My twelve year old son and sexual obsession...

by Nick, Apr 01, 2000 12:00AM
I have a twelve year old son who is obsessive with his penis. I catch him making outrageous acts with himself like trying to get his penis in his mouth, etc...

He also looks at penis enlarging websites, and penis-photo websites. I have banned the web from him, and I am pretty sure this is not normal. He is not gay. He is already going out with girls, and shows no sexual attraction to males whatsoever. What is the cause of this? What can I do about it?

Dear Nick,

You should probably have your son evaluated by a child mental health clinician. For an early adolescent boy to be concerned about his penis is not unusual - in fact, it's to be expected. His behavior indicates that he might have some particular insecurites, which may be beyond what might be considered average for his age.

Relative to the matter of sexuality, it sounds like you have some concerns about this. You might want to raise this with the clinician if you do decide on an evaluation. Twelve is a very young age, and your son is only at the beginning of awareness of sexual impulses. You might unwittingly be communicating some unrest about the nature of his sexuality.
