I have an 11 year old daughter, only child. Excellent student, very smart, and a large circle of friends. She has got to be very disrespectful towards her mother and I. Slamming doors, yelling when she does not get her way. Last night, while playing a family card game, she was whining and complaining about not winning. I told her that we are playing for fun, and family time, and it is not about winning. She responded by throwing her cards in my face, and storming out of the room. I has been years since she has been spanked, her discipline usually consists of sending her to her room, or loss of privalges, which is usually her horseback riding lesson. It seems that her normal response to questions that she is not comfortable with is to yell or scream. I do not know if this is normal devolopment, or if we need to seek some professional help for her. Sounds like I have a spoiled brat on my hands.

To tell you the truth, it sounds like adolescence. Now, even though the behavior may not be out of the norm for a girl of 11, it doesn't mean you should tolerate it or let it go without comment. A possible plan is as follows: let her know that, while you are understanding that she'll have her own point of view about things, you will not accept mistreatment at her hands, and her horseback riding will be contingent on treating you in a reasonable fashion.
