Non-drug treatments of Prostititis

by Bullseye, Jun 26, 2003 12:00AM
Male Age 68. Had testicular cancer in 1983 and had malignant growth removed from penis in 1997. Irritation of penis continued after 1997 with no or little remedy by doctor. August, 2002 began ache in remaining testicle. Urologist diagnosed as coming from Prostrate infection. Numerous anti-biotics had no effect on testicle ache. All biopsis and bladder scope revealed no cancer and my PSA is .7. Testicle ache continued and in May,2003 the severe ache and urinary urgency syndrome came on me for the first time. Have had another prostrate massage and am on antibiotics with little improvement to date. By the end of each day,I cannot sit or lay without continual aching in pelvis. Have to cancel trip to Scotland because I cannot tolerate lengthy periods of sitting. My urologist suggests continued massages (which just about kill me), a vasectomy to possibly deal with the testicular pain and maybe micro-wave treatment of the prostrate. I don't feel the drugs are going to work. Don't have confidence in treatment being offered and certainly cannot live with my current condition

Who are the experts on this and where else can I go for treatment?

Hello - thanks for asking your question.

There are several non-drug treatments of prostatitis.  First of all, I would consider some imaging (either with a CT scan or ultrasound) to make sure that an abscess is not present.  An abscess cannot be treated with antibiotics.

Sitz baths and transurethral microwave thermotherapy have been used with varying success.

Bladder neck and urethral spasm can sometimes be treated with alpha blocking agents such as terazosin which an decrease the discomfort.

If there is any pelvic floor dysfunction, diazepam has been used with some success.

To find another urological opinion, here is the website from the American Urological Association. You can find a urologist near you for a second opinion:

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
