Exercising through an atial fibrillation?

by katy, Dec 11, 2000 12:00AM
My doctor thinks my atial fibrillation is caused by a hormone that starts with the letter "C" (I can't remember the name -- would you know the name?) that is released into my heart(?) when I exercise because I'm fat. My doctor told me to keep on exercising but when I do, I get the fibrillations. I've heard that they get easier and easier to get each time you get one and I'm scared that I'll start having them all the time. Right now I get them when I've walked more than a block or if I've walked too fast. I even get them after I've eaten in the evening, even though I eat small meals anymore being on a diet and all. My doctor put me on wayfaren and a calcium blocker.

Question #1 -- What is the name of that hormone and how does it work?

Question #2 -- Should I keep on walking when I get the fibs or stop and rest until they go away? When I do that, they start back up again when I start walking again.

Question #3 -- Can I loose enough weight (need to lose 100 pounds)just from dieting if I can't exercise?

Dear Katy,

Question #1 -- What is the name of that hormone and how does it work?

A: Adrenaline (epinephrine) is released into one's blood stream when they exercise and high levels of adrenaline can cause palpitations.

Question #2 -- Should I keep on walking when I get the fibs or stop and rest until they go away? When I do that,

they start back up again when I start walking again.

A:This is hard to say.  How was the atrial fibrillation diagnosed?  Was it with a Holter monitor?  If you really have atrial fibrillation you may need some medication to help control it.

Question #3 -- Can I loose enough weight (need to lose 100 pounds)just from dieting if I can't exercise?

A: It can be done but exercise certainly helps.

Thanks Doc, but the hormone really did begin with a "C" I made her repeat it twice and it wasn't the one you mentioned. I know there are so many hormones, I was just wondering how this particular one works.  I was diagnosed with atial fibrillation while in the doctor's office one day.
