Question Title: "pimple on eye"

Forum: The Eye Care Forum
Topic: Misc (Eye Problems)

For the last 4 days I have had a red bloodshot eye that has been slightly uncomfortable. There is a "pimple" looking bump right next to my iris on the nasal side of the eye. The redness seems to begin at the "pimple" and continue to the corner of the eye. The "pimple" is raised and is white in color. Is this anything to be concerned about?? Can I just wait to see if it clears up in a few days or should I contact my physician now? It seems to have come on almost overnight, I keep hoping it will just disapear as quickly. Thank you for supporting this forum, it is wonderful to be able to ask questions of experts without feeling embarassed or "silly".

It sounds as though you have a subconjunctival hemorrhage or a bruise on the surface of the eye. This can occur spontaneously or after rubbing the eye, coughing hard or straining. This is the result of a broken blood vessel. I cannot explain the whitish bump but this may be normal conjunctiva surrounded by hemorrhage. Like most bruises this will go away after 7 to 10 days. It is probably ok to wait a couple days to see if it is getting somewhat smaller, otherwise I would recommend seeing an ophthalmologist. If there is any pain or any change in your vision see your ophthalmologist.

Good luck.
