Diabets, Fasting & Surgery

by marshmallow, Nov 27, 2008 06:03PM
Can someone explain this to me in layman's terms so that I can understand?
I have surgery tomorrow and just remembered this community.
I am on Lantus at night for my basal insulin and NovoRapid at meals.

The endo at the pre-op told me I would be one of the first becasue I cannot be fasting a long time.

I found out today that my surgery time is 1 pm tomorrow.

I will take my Lantus tonight, and not eat after midnight (actually not eat after 10 pm when I go to sleep). I will likely wake up with a  6-7 reading (Canadian, that's in range)

This is what I do not understand. When I wake up in the morning, since I will not eat, I will not take my novo rapid or metformin. What will my blood sugar do?
Will it rise because there was no breakfas tinculin? But how could it since there also is no breakfast? Will it fall? But why, since there is no rapid insulin....
I just don't understand what the risk is in fasting until 1 pm....isn't my basal insulin, with no food and no further rapid insulin , carrying me??
Can anyone help me to understand? I'm getting just a tad worried here......

Also, anyone diabetic and had their thyroid removed, I"d like to hear if there was any impac ton the diabets?

Many thanks!!!
