What is the best diet pill that helps you to lose weight

by becky384, Nov 28, 2008 08:03PM
My doctor recently put me on Adipex 37.5 mg once a day. I was reading something about Meridia and was wondering if it was a better diet pill. I need something to get me going and I am going to join a health club next week to see if I can start burning some calories. I am 5'5" tall and weigh 272 lbs. I am 38 and I am here to tell you once you are past 30 the pounds seem to just pile on overnight. Is there any tips that anyone can offer to help build up my metabolism and jump start my diet plan?

Just being over 30 doesn't mean the pounds have to pile on.  Although it seems like the pounds packed on overnight, it probably actually took a while for it happen and you just didn't realize it, unless you have medical issues. Considering that you probably didn't gain all the weight over night, it's not healthy (or practical) to expect to lose it all over night. Have you checked with your doctor to make sure there aren't underlying medical problems causing weight gain/retention? Be sure to get a complete physical exam.  I'm 59 yrs old and did not have any trouble maintaining my weight (5' tall and stayed 105-115 lbs until I developed hypothyroidism a couple yrs ago and by the time I was diagnosed I'd put on over 30 pounds.  Be sure to get your doctor's blessing before starting on a diet/exercise program; keep in mind that most doctors will endorse a healthy eating/exercise program.

Then get on a healthy eating plan; there are several websites that you can access to get healthy eating tips, including calories/serving and portion sizes.  Do start a food journal so you know exactly how many calories you are consuming and what foods they come from.  Also be sure to keep your portion sizes under control.

Begin an exercise program - walking is always great, provided you have a safe place to walk and weather permits; starting out slowly and working your way up to longer times, harder, more intense workouts, etc.  If you are going to join a gym, that will help out a lot to burn calories.  Remember, you have to burn more calories than you take in, in order to lose weight, but don't drop your calorie intake too low as your body requires a certain amount just to stay alive.  Again, there are quite a few websites that you can access to help figure out how many calories you need daily.

Good luck and stay tuned to this community to get lots of info and encouragement.  As gokuangel said: join the challenge and check out the exercises posted daily.  Try the weight and exercise trackers here on MedHelp - they will help you keep up with it all.
