SON WONT SLEEP!!!!!!!!!

by motherofan18month, Nov 29, 2008 07:57AM
for the past year my 2 1/2 yr. old son has been only sleeping maybe 6 hours .....8 when i make him, on some days he gets as little as 4 hours of sleep. he doesn't get candy, and sweets (cakes/cookies) are only occasionally..... i put the t.v. in his room to see if he could fall asleep while watching cartoons/something, and have even let him sleep with me & my husband and its still the same....he just wants to play all the time, i woke up one morning at 3 am to find him playing in his room that night it took me 3 hours to get him to go to sleep after trying warm milk, a bath,  nigh-time lotions, everything......and he still only slept 5 hours. he doesn't take naps through the day and if he does it's only 20 minutes or less! i cant figure it out.......all he wants to do is PLAY 24/7!

Is he stimulated enough during the day?if he goes to day care do they play games ,  No TV in his room this only feeds his imagination, some reading before bed, no milk in the night same thing,You say he doesnt take a nap during the day , if he is in Day care they do usually put them for a nap at 2 year old.  Also if you are taking him into your bed he is getting mixed messages and wont want to sleep in his own bed, be consistant with him sleeping in his own bed, and let him play when he wakes early in his own Crib.

no... he isn't in day care...although i think it would be helpful i cant find a good one. we just recently put him in our room (a week ago) and he hasn't changed his ways.....i thought maybe it was because he is an only child and only has my lil brother around to play with that he might need to branch out and be playing with other kids just to further his daily stimulation, but im not sure if that is the problem or not!

He is aware you are in the room, unless you want him to continue to want to be with you, and thats okay ,a lot of parents prefer to have their children in their room and in their bed ,it is a choice, it will be harder as he gets older to let him go into his own room and bed, however .The playing is proably because you are in the room and you speak to him and play or do you ignore him ?

Children are creatures of habit.  I would advise getting the television out of the room asap!  Television stimulates your brain with sights and sounds.  I recommend trying to establish a routine.  Make sure he gets plenty of exercise in his daily routine.  Know I do know that you cannot always follow a routine because life changes daily but it's best to have a "normal" schedule.  Try this..it worked for my four year old and now working on my two yea old.  After you eat supper, keep the television off.  Turn the lights down low and have him do something like color, draw, play with quiet toys (army men in our house).  You could do a bath at this time to for him if you'd like.  The main focus is to keep the stimilus to a minimum.  This won't happen overnight.  This took us a few weeks but eventually it worked.  The exercise during the day is key though, he's got to get all of his energy out during the day prior to supper time.
