Transmission through saliva as lubricant

by continental, Nov 29, 2008 02:24PM
Dear Doctor,

four days ago I had a mutual masturbation with a sex worker I met in a bar in Las Vegas. There was no penetration, intimate parts never touched, but she used some saliva as lubricant. Additional body lotion was used before she applied the saliva. None of us brushed teeth before this and we had drinks - she had vodka on the rocks. I had no cuts or bruises on my penis as far as I could see. Also, at one point she licked her finger and lubricated her clitoris. No oral sex was performed, i.e. my penis was never in her mouth, neither I touched her vagina with mine.

Considering all the factors, what are my chances to get HIV infected?

Thanks!

Hand-genital contact never has been known to transmit HIV, even when saliva or genital secretions are used as lubricant.  Saliva inactivates HIV and is rarely a source of transmission.  Further, it is the rare sex worker in Las Vegas who has HIV.  You are at no risk of HIV from this event and do not need testing.

Best wishes--  HHH, MD
