Any diet that has no carbohydrates in it would force the body to break down fat for energy. The Anabolic diet is a high protein diet with no carbs except on weekends so your body is breaking down fat for energy. There are some carbs in this diet in the vegetables and dairy products in the work-down shakes but not much during the week. The danger with breaking down fat for energy is that ketones are the by-products and can be life threatening if rises too high. With any high protein diet there needs to be medical monitoring of ketones.
Ketogenic Diet is a diet for epileptics (mainly children); however, it needs to be monitored medically, very closely, by a Team of MD, Nurse, and Nutritionist. The ketogenic diet was the only "therapy" used to control seizures way before there was medication. When medication was discovered the diet was not used. There was a resurge of the diet back in the early 90's due to the numerous side effects of the seizure medications. This diet has to be well controlled and followed by the medical team due to the medical risks of elevated levels of ketones. There have been numerous successes in children that either are completely free of medication or decreased to 1-2 types of meds. They found the most success with children under the age of 5 or less. This diet should NOT be used to lose weight or build muscle in healthy adults.
I do believe that everyone is different and some people do lose weight on a slightly higher protein diet then others. Yet some people who go on a vegetarian diet with no meat products do lose weight and can build muscle. Our bodies need protein, carbohydrates, and fat (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are good for us in moderation) on a daily basis. A healthy diet would have all 3 nutrients in them to consume daily.
