puppy with diarrhea

by dynaglide, Nov 30, 2008 11:11AM
My 5 mouth old German Shepard still has the diarrhea off and on daily. I just found out her mother had coccidia. My puppy does eat her national brand food but not that much. Is there anything I sould ask my vet to look at on her next visit?

Are you using a puppy food forumulation?  Over the years I've found that whatever is in the puppy foods tends to cause loose stools if not outright diarrhea.  Wish I knew what the ingredient is that causes the trouble, but I've never figured it out.  As soon as I'd make the switch to an adult food, the symptoms disappeared.

Just make sure you tell your vet exactly what symptoms your pup has and take it from there.  If he doesn't offer any ideas, then head to another vet.  It could be anything from a simple food allergy (grains like corn being the biggest usual offenders) or a disease process.  You might go ahead and take her to your vet now instead of waiting for a regularly scheduled visit for shots.  Obviously something isn't quite right and it's better to get started on a diagnosis sooner rather than later.  :-)
